Diet Pepsi Brings Aspartame Back

Diet Pepsi Brings Aspartame Back

After surveying consumers for two years, PepsiCo decided they were wrong when they eliminated aspartame from their recipe for Diet Pepsi. Apparently there were some studies that linked the artificial sweetener to cancer and obesity. Due to health concerns, in August last year, PepsiCo announced the removal of aspartame from Diet Pepsi.  Today, due to a plummeting in sales, and after a better examination, Pepsi has decided to bring back aspartame to their diet version.

The new Diet Pepsi was sweetened instead with sucralose, another artificial sweetener.  This sparked a problem for Pepsi which saw how sales went into a dive. Pepsi now not only had to deal with consumers who were trying to avoid artificial sweeteners but now those who stayed faithful did not like the taste of sucralose and preferred aspartame.

PepsiCo will re-launch Diet Pepsi with aspartame in September and will offer US consumers options with and without the controversial sweetener.

In April 2015, surveys conducted by PepsiCo sustained the idea that aspartame as a sweetener was the No. 1 reason why Americans were not consuming Diet Pepsi. This had been the sweetener used for diet beverages since the 1980s.  Its safety had even been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration over and over again.  However, bloggers indicated that the substance was dangerous, making the American public grow skeptical about the sweetener.

But when aspartame was replaced by sucralose, consumers went on to social media claiming that they did not like the new flavor, describing it as “yuck” and “unpalatable”.

"Consumers want choice in diet colas, so we're refreshing our U.S. lineup to provide three options that meet differing needs and taste preferences," said a representative of PepsiCo. The company will launch the traditional Diet Pepsi aspartame-free with a label.  Along with it, the rebranding of Zero Max, a 0-calorie Diet Pepsi with aspartame.
